Fleeces and Funk

British funk and acid house group Jamiroquai have blessed listeners with the cult-classic, exquisitely choreographed dance scene in the 2004 film Napoleon Dynamite featuring the song ‘Canned Heat’. And, of course, great tunes such as ‘Virtual Insanity’, the music video of which is a perfect example of Jay Kay’s style.

It may come as a surprise to discover that Jamiroquai’s vocalist Jay Kay, in his 1990s prime, dresses like many university students (and middle-aged dads) do today. Kay is most well-known for his collection of huge fur hats, which create an iconic on-stage silhouette when worn with oversized t-shirts and jeans and provides more free movement for Kay’s dancing.

Aside from the hats, it’s not clear if Kay had a brand deal with Berghaus or if he was just really into their outerwear (most likely the latter), but they are a staple of many of his outfits in the nineties. Contrasting starkly with his American accented singing voice, Jay Kay’s typical outfit consisting of Berghaus fleece and tapered beige pants, topped off with some Adidas, could not be more British.

Whilst this style is weather-appropriate and comfortable for most UK seasons, it’s timeless and readily available second-hand. He may be an unlikely source for autumnal style inspiration; but this is undoubtedly fleece season, and no one wears them better.
